Mouraria

Holiday homes in Mouraria, Lisbon

Lisbon's most mixed neighbourhood, five minutes below the castle, and flat enough to walk into Baixa without a climb — a rarer thing in this city than it should be.

What it's actually like to stay here

Mouraria sits on flatter ground than its hillside neighbours, so the walk to Rossio is a level 5 minutes and Praça do Comércio is 10 to 12. That flatness is the neighbourhood's real advantage over Alfama and even parts of Chiado: you can wheel a suitcase from the metro to the door without a single flight of outdoor steps. The castle is the exception: 10 to 15 minutes uphill and genuinely steep, so budget energy for it rather than treating it as a quick stroll, and don't plan it as your first activity after a long flight.

Martim Moniz metro station, on the Green line, is the neighbourhood's transport anchor, and it's also the eastern terminus of Tram 28. That means a queue if you board there. Walking a stop or two along the route and catching it already moving is usually faster and just as scenic. To the airport, it's a change at Alameda, roughly 25 to 30 minutes door to door on the metro.

What's within walking distance

Mouraria is widely considered the birthplace of fado, and Rua do Benformoso, the main artery, runs through the middle of that history. Martim Moniz square has food kiosks representing the most multicultural part of the city, good for a quick, inexpensive meal without walking far.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

Good for groups who want to be near the centre without the tourist density of Alfama or the price of Chiado, and for anyone who'd rather walk flat than climb. Families with young children or anyone who packs heavy do especially well here for that reason. Martim Moniz square itself is busy during the day, but the inner residential lanes where our homes sit are quiet. First-time visitors often expect Mouraria to look like the postcard shots of Alfama or Chiado; it doesn't, and that's the trade for the flat streets and lower prices.

Less good for anyone who needs a lift: neither of our two Mouraria homes has one. It's also worth knowing this is a working, lived-in neighbourhood rather than a curated tourist one; if you were picturing postcard Lisbon at every turn, Martim Moniz square's plainer, busier character during the day can come as a surprise. If you're driving, there's no private garage at either home, but paid parking and EV charging are both available nearby.

The two homes here

Mouraria Terrace is the larger of the two, four bedrooms sleeping 8 with air conditioning, a terrace and an EV charger, right on the Tram 28 route. No lift.

Benformoso is a two-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath home for up to 6, also with air conditioning, a terrace, an EV charger and Tram 28 access. No lift.

What to expect on arrival

Check-in is after 15:00 and check-out before 11:00, with self check-in available at most homes. Entry is by pin pad, with a unique code generated for your stay. Every home carries a smoke alarm, a carbon monoxide alarm, a fire extinguisher, a kitchen fire blanket and a first aid kit, as standard across all our properties.

The only thing you'll pay locally is the municipal tourist tax, €4 per guest per night in Lisbon, capped at seven consecutive nights; guests under 13 are exempt. Everything else is settled in your booking. Mouraria Terrace suits a group of 6 to 8 well; Benformoso is the better fit for a family of 6 or fewer who want the extra guest WC.

Booking a Mouraria home

Booking direct on this site is the lowest price for the same apartment, with no booking fee added at checkout. The only thing collected on arrival is the Lisbon city tourist tax. Our team is on WhatsApp 24/7 if you have questions before you book. If you're staying a month or more rather than a few nights, see our monthly rentals page for homes better suited to longer stays.
